The Great And Good

15 March 2010

This last weekend, the Global Atheist Foundation has held its conference in Melbourne – I would have loved to attend.  As I’ve mentioned before, it was denied funding from the State and Federal Governments who appear to dole out cash willy-nilly to any half-baked “religion” that comes its way but tend not to extend their generosity to atheism.

The conference did make it to the front pages of the Sydney Morning Herald this morning, but probably only because Richard Dawkins was being controversial and not very flattering to an Australian Senator, Steve Fielding, who he asserted has the intelligence of an earthworm – something else I can agree with Dawkins about.  I hold no particular grudge against earthworms but this particular one holds the balance of power in the Senate.

I thought this would be just the moment to use some wonderful quotes I’ve come across lately:

Robert G Ingersoll (an American political leader during the time of the Civil War):  “Our ignorance is God; what we know is Science”.

And I loved this one from Homer Simpson:  “Suppose we’ve chosen the wrong God.  Every time we go to church, we’re just making him madder and madder”.

  1. Toby really wanted to go, but alas it was too expensive.

For the record, Toby suggests anyone who believes in Intelligent Design should be forced to attend the “what might go wrong in labour” ante-natal class as there is no possible way an intelligent being would have come up with such a fraught process to increase their number of worshippers.

  2. Give Homer Simpson the balance of power, I say.

  3. I can’t remember if I’ve posted this before but it probably bears repetition! “Science flies you to the moon; religion flies you into buildings”.
